Bahamas (WSR): Aug - Sept 2000
This group of Atlantic spotted dolphins, found in Bahamian waters, was introduced to the scientific and public communities through popular films and articles. The focus of my research on these spotted dolphins is to understand possible correlations between the sounds and behavior of dolphins, including any variation among individual dolphins. Communication studies require the ability to identify individuals and the signals utilized by individuals; it is especially important to identify the signal emitter and receiver when examining the intricacies of subtle interactions between social animals. When we hauled anchor to head north in hopes of finding more dolphins, the winds were 10-15 knots and the seas 1-2 feet. This was not to last.
