Come to Bimini!!

611

Looking for an exciting, hands-on spring course? The Dolphin Communication Project (DCP) is pleased to offer a FIELD COURSE IN COASTAL MARINE SPECIES in Bimini, The Bahamas. DCP, a non-profit research and education group, has been studying the wild Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins off Bimini since 2001.

Dates: April 24 – May 4, 2017 (10 nights)

With instruction from DCP’s Kelly Melillo Sweeting, and Dr. Stephen Turnbull, of University of New Brunswick Saint John, students will be introduced to the study of animal biology and behavior using a combination of lectures, readings, discussion, and observational research within the natural ecosystem of Bimini. Content will focus on a foundation of species’ biology as it relates to understanding animal behavior and current research and methodology. Fieldwork allows students to develop skills necessary to conduct observational research in the wild with experienced scientists. More than 50% of course content will focus on dolphins, specifically Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins. Five boat trips in search of wild dolphins are scheduled; students will assist in data collection, including taking underwater photographs (yes, this means swimming with wild dolphins!). Four boat trips will focus on sharks, reef fish, stingrays and mangrove habitat.

*Cost: $2,765 per person (USD). Does not include tuition or airfare.

*Ready to sign up? Email us (info{at}dcpmail{dot}org) for an application and deposit ($500) instructions. Applications & deposits are due 14 January 2017.

*Four more students will be accepted to this program. Acceptance is on a first-come, first-serve basis. A $500 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your space. Final payment is due 1 March 2017.

*Airfare costs will depend on your home airport. To get an estimate, search for flights from your home airport to Bimini (BIM), via FLL, MIA or NAS. Contact DCP for additional suggestions.

*Tuition costs depend on your university/college's fees and policies. Contact your registrar or study abroad department. All students are responsible for coordinating course credit with their home universities/colleges.

Anyone fluent in English and over 18 years old can participate. However, students currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program are given first-priority. Registration for non-matriculated students is now open.

This is your chance for a hands-on research experience with top scientists in The beautiful Bahamas!
